Ceramics

Honeycomb ceramics are widely used in power generation, desulfurization and denitrification, and exhaust gas treatment of automobiles.

With the advancement of technology, thin-walled honeycomb ceramic technology is increasingly used.

Cellulose ether plays a vital role in the production of thin-walled honeycomb ceramics and significantly affects the shape retention of the green body.

The raw material loaded into a ceramic extrusion machine is usually fine powder, with a combination of additives in the form of binders and plasticizers to impart the desired rheology.

This allows the ceramic to flow freely thru the die, with or without heating or vacuum.

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) are cellulose ethers that have had hyrdroxyl groups on the cellulose chain substituted for a methoxy or hydroxypropyl group. HPMC is used as a thickener, binder, and film former in ceramics applications. Aqueous solutions of HPMC will reversibly gel when exposed to heat allowing for a controllable boost is green strength of green ceramic bodies.

Powder Granulating

Cellulose ether prevents sedimentation in spray drying slips and acts as rheology modifier. It contributes to an advantageous particle size distribution of the dried granules and fast filling of pressing moulds. In combination with plasticising and other additives, it provides high green strength and shows excellent debinding behaviour.

Engobes & Glazes

Tape casting: Use of cellulose ethers provides better flow and leveling and more uniform thickness. Low sodium residues provide the purity necessary for electronic items. Thermal gelation reduces binder migration and surface faults.

Powder Metallurgy

In powder metallurgic extrusion applications, special cellulose ether grades provide an outstanding thickening effect in water and in certain compositions of organic solvents.
